South Africa Safaris
Safari is the Swahili word for journey, for most of us this would involve viewing wild animals and birds in the wilderness, usually in a remote national park or reserve. There is a huge choice of styles and destinations, this can make safari planning a mind boggling experience, which is why you are probably reading this! It helps to break the options down into a few steps.
Big Five
Throughout the African continent you’ll repeatedly hear the phrase the Big Five. The term refers to the five most sought after species; lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo and originates from the days of widespread big game hunting. These five species were considered to be the most dangerous to hunt. These days it is most often used by lodges and reserves as part of their advertising. Occasionally you’ll hear of the Big Six, a more precise term, indicating both species of rhino. Just to confuse things, the term Big seven indicates the Big Five plus cheetah and African wild dog.
Safari Destinations
Within South Africa you can experience a variety of different safaris where the wildlife and scenery will differ remarkably. If this will be your first time on safari we would recommend either the Eastern Cape (for quick access from Cape Town and the Garden Route) or the Kruger National Park in the North West of South Africa which is undoubtedly the best safari in South Africa. The Kruger Park is easily accessed from Johannesburg. If you have been on safari before in South Africa why not venture further afield and explore some of the remotest parts of Africa like Botswana or Tanzania.
